Hampstead Mixed Bathing Pond
Hampstead's Mixed Pond records the slow normalisation of men and women swimming together in open water after Victorian resorts had regulated even their proximity.
The story
The Heath's reservoir ponds became swimming waters during the nineteenth century. The mixed pond offers a useful counterpoint to Llandudno's former segregation rules: a shared outdoor space in which mixed bathing became ordinary. It remains an operating facility, and its present rules, water conditions and seasonal access matter more to a visit than the historical map pin.
