The story

Hampstead Heath's ponds began as water-company reservoirs and became democratic swimming places. The men's pond was formally opened for swimming in 1893 and remains in use. Its social history includes privacy, bodily freedom and queer community, but it is first of all a living public facility: present-day opening, safety and admission information should be checked with the City of London.
